Detailed Description:
In order for OS X imaging to be fully deployed, a DHCP or PXE server must support NetBoot.

Proposed Solution:
Microfiches should extend the ZCM PXE server to support the publicly available NetBoot.
The home grown methods for doing this are fairly well known, for a sample see here:
http://www.afp548.com/netboot/mactips/bootpd.html
http://www.tuaw.com/2006/12/08/roll-your-own-netboot-server-on-linux/

Value Proposition:
ZCM would begin to support OS X imaging, allowing an organization to leverage Novell solutions for its OS X clients instead of having to invest in OS X server, roll their own Linux NetBoot server, or buy products from JAMF.

Comments

  • I understand netboot imaging doesn't work with all the Macs now on the market due to the T2 chip so this will only ever be for legacy hardware. (This probably wasn't the case when this idea was logged.) Unless implementing netboot is fairly trivial I'd suggest a better use of that investment would be to bring DEP (and VPP) deployment along with support for Apple's MDM mechanisms to the MacOS platform.

  • With ZENworks 2020, NetBoot would be supported. However, due to limitation on devices having T2 Chip, focus going forward would be on bringing in DEP & VPP capabilities for mac devices.

  • Thanks Vikram. This is the right decision. I look forward to seeing that functionality.

  • This has been implemented in ZENworks 2020. https://www.novell.com/documentation/zenworks-2020/zen_whats_new/data/t4al753ajybh.html#patch2017
