Hi Team,

I am working for one of the India's Media organisations on Zenworks 2017 update3a implementation and have raised a requirement from the customer that while submitting agent deployment task if they select Immediate reboot option then post installation of agent the machine gets rebooted immediately which is impacting their users and SLAs.

They have requested to check with Micro Focus how to customize the reboot interval and a SR#101217304391 was raised for the same. However, the response was not positive as the engineer confirmed the said feature is currently not available in Zenworks 2017 update 3a and not expected in near future. Ideally, it actually makes sense to customize the reboot interval as per the requirement like 5 or 10 or 15 or 30 minutes as per customer requirements and based on that once the agent is deployed the user should be given that much of time to save his work and if he is working on an urgent task then he should be able to finish it before the reboot ocurrs.

Would be great if you kindly include the above feature in your next release of Zenworks 2017 and confirm via email on ramesh@allsolutionz.com. Feel free to connect with me in case you need any further information on this ask.

Awaiting positive response on above request.

Thanks
Ramesh Daryani

  • Hello Ramesh. Wouldn't it make more sense for them to use the "Prompt user to reboot when update finishes applying" feature when deploying to users? It also has options to reboot immediately if no one is logged in. We use that option and the system update process allows the user to postpone the reboot if you set the proper options under Configuration > Device Management > System Update Agent. We only use the "Force device to reboot" for server upgrades or for testing. HTH. -Patrick T.

  • Thanks Patrick for the quick response!

We initially tried manual reboot option to prompt the user for reboot, however most of the users clicked on cancel resulting maximum of our deployment tasks showing the status 'awaiting reboot'. Basically, our requirement is to force the reboot so that the client machines are successfully registered with Zenworks primary server, but at the same time we do not want user's work to be impacted in case they are working on a SLA mapped task and that's the reason we want a pop-up to be displayed on client machine that their machine require reboot which will happen in next 10 or 15 mins. This will help user to save his work and complete the pending task.

Hope you understood our requirement. Do let me know if there is any alternate option available for this?

    Thanks & regards,

  • Ramesh, you can turn on the "Reboot Prompt Nag Dialog" under Configuration > Device Management > System Update Agent and set a value for the "Reboot Prompt Max Postpone" so the user can reboot at a later time but is eventually forced to do so. Note: That value is zero-based so if you want to allow 3 postpones, you'd enter 2. A timeout and nag period can also be specified. We use 30 mins for both.

We also use custom system update messages so that the user knows what is happening.

REBOOT_MSG is "The system software upgrade has now been completed. PLEASE CLICK OK TO REBOOT NOW OTHERWISE YOU MAY EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF APPLICATION FUNCTIONALITY. THIS MESSAGE WILL BE DISPLAYED FOR {1} MINUTES AND THE REBOOT WILL HAPPEN AUTOMATICALLY IF NO ACTION IS TAKEN BEFORE THEN. This reboot can only be postponed 3 times by clicking Cancel but it will retry in 30 minutes if it is postponed."

REBOOT_MSG_NO_POSTPONES_REMAINING is "The system software upgrade has now been completed. PLEASE CLICK OK TO REBOOT NOW OTHERWISE YOU MAY EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF APPLICATION FUNCTIONALITY. The number of times this reboot can be postponed has already been exhausted for this workstation and it must continue. THIS MESSAGE WILL BE DISPLAYED FOR 30 MINUTES AND THE REBOOT WILL HAPPEN AUTOMATICALLY IF NO ACTION IS TAKEN BEFORE THEN."

REBOOT_MSG_POSTPONES_ONE_REMAINING is "This reboot can be postponed one final time by clicking Cancel but it will retry in 30 minutes and it must be done at that time.".

  • Patrick,

I see you are more talking about system update whereas I am looking for reboot interval setting for zenworks agent deployment. Is it the same setting for zenworks agent deployment also? I mean if I set the reboot prompt maximum postpones then while pushing the zenworks agent deployment via task would also use the same setting snd user would be allowed to postpone reboot for the timeout value I will set and once it exhausts then client machine would reboot? Please clarify.

  • Ah, Ramesh, you are right - I had system update on my mind rather than agent deployment! Sorry about that. Sorry, I don't know if those features work with deployment.
