I believe that many members of the community if they think about it would want to see NetIQ/Novell Open Source eDirectory while continuing to be the project maintainer/owner.

Not only would this potentially allow for other developers to contribute features and bug fixes back to Novell/NetIQ into eDirectory but would give eDirectory the opportunity to gain market share on other Linux platforms and potentially unite multiple Linux platforms within a single robust x.500 directory infrastructure.

It could also potentially open more markets to Novell/NetIQ eDirectory based services and grow market share for eDirectory. Novell/NetIQ could sell support for other platforms using the Open Source deployment of eDirectory.

  • I believe for this adoption in the community to happen not only eDirectory should be open sourced but the core of OES should. If we can make a de facto Domain Services solution adopted in the community and also get vendor support for this solution that would make maintaining a OES solution and depending products easier. There is quite some reasoning behind this which I posted in the Idea Portal as "Make OES core components open source and part of SUSE" @ https://www1.v1ideas.com/MFI/novell-oes/Idea/Detail/1500
