Just using an example here:

We had an eDir group that refused to show up in Filr. I would run the LDAP sync and watch it until it finished and it would not show the group.

If I ran the PREVIEW sync results, it would show the group.

Turns out there was an error in the appserver log (once you enabled debugging) but seriously, it would've been a lot more helpful/obvious if it had shown the error instead of "nope, all is good, nothing to see here").
