Problem Description

Users are used to NetStorage which we would like to replace with Filr. They would like all of their storage areas(common folders) that automatically map from their Novell login scripts to show up as Net Folders automatically.

Proposed Solution

Have Filr read the login script from the users and automatically create Net Folders for all but the Home Directory mapping. Make this routine something that can be scheduled to run during off hours to update the list when new storage locations are added. Also give Administrators a way to exclude some mappings from the login script. We used to be able to do this in the login script with an IF statement to check if the login was from NetStorage.

If using the login script as the source for mapped drives isn't ideal then at least create a list of NetFolders with no access rights from the login script. Then allow the Administrator to set the users file rights to the NetFolder volumes manually.

Perceived Benefit

This will allow Filr to actually replace the Novell Client if users so choose. Especially, on Operating Systems that do not have the Novell Client this would be very useful for IT departments. We would then be able to support those platforms with private storage areas we create.

We may only want to allow sharing for a small subset of our users and supporting automatic Net Folders from folders that we assign to users would allow us to more easily allow for shared storage area collaboration using Filr without having to manually create and update all Net Folders.

Comments

  • Possibly leverage MS group policy mappings. We use Novell Directory Services for Windows to emulate an AD environment for our windows 7+ users.

Also any integrations or replacement of ifolder 2/3 functionality so the users local My Documents directory can be synced to filr and used to
restore their local files when a hard drive crashes or a laptop is stolen/lost.
