a desktop client for linux, SLED 12 would be a good start, but platform independent would be better

Comments

  • linux desktop client is a must for filr.
If filr is the successor of iFolder

  • SLED12 pulled mono support, so no iFolder there either

  • afaik the deskop client is implemented in Python which means that a linux port might be a manageable effort.

  • Just as a side-note:
Webdav access is not a usable workaround for a Linux client as it does not work "offline".

  • I need Filr for linux!

  • I'll vote for this as well. With the removal of the Novell Client for Linux and no Filr client, it really makes it harder to use in a Linux environment.

  • The academic world uses Linux a lot as main desktop. Thus a native client is a must. Don't miss out on the fact that our students are the up and coming decision makers for many companies. They need to be exposed to this great product in the most positive way.

  • As the support for the Novell client for Linux is very poor or none existent as far as I know. Especially if you are running none Micro Focus/Novell/SuSE distribution of Linux. So I agree with everybody that there needs to be an client for Linux. And we have all possible distributions running under our roof.

  • One of my team member from QA has already implemented POC which is almost similar to what am reading in this forum and am sure we can take this forward if we go down on this feature and with her permission I have copy and pasted the same from the abtract ..

    FILR LINUX CLIENT-POC

    MOTIVATION:
During the Brain-Share preview conducted at the Novell Bangalore (Cafeteria), there was a request for a Linux Client in-addition to the existing Windows and Mac Clients.

    ABSTRACT:
The existing Merged View in MAC is developed with FUSE for OS X .
Similar to this, a Merged View Version of Linux Client can be developed with the help of FUSE.
With FUSE development library for C language installed, we send the rest requests from the Linux client. The rest requests are sent from a bash script and the XML response from Filr is parsed to be used by FUSE. The username and password are taken as input from command line and the test for Login is made before Mounting FUSE .The same username and password are used while listing folders and files.
The requests that were planned for the initial version of the Linux Client are listing folder contents recursively and Displaying Files. The initial version of the Linux Client is only a command Line Version and the Nautilus (File Explorer) Version has not been integrated.

  • Best idea so far.

  • As I don't want to use Windows anymore and I love Filr I need a Linux client

  • missing Linux GUI (NSS) long time and now also Filr Clinet - is hard to explain that customers ...

  • Our University has mostly technically students, they run everything on their devices. Also a lot of Linux laptops and workstations in the labs. We really appreciate a Linux client!

  • I only use Linux and unfortunately can't use my Filr because there is no port. Please prioritize this since it affects more and more people.

    Thank you.

  • The Filer work on Android, so this is the Linux. In my opinion is no problem to compile on SLED or other distribution.

  • The hardest part of supporting Linux may be in the amount of distro's to support. To solve that issue I would suggest we leverage the openSUSE Build Service for this.

As a niche player with Filr, I think we should support as many platforms as possible. The Filr client 'engine' would not be too hard to support on multiple linux distro's (see kiran prabhu d.'s follow up) and most of the work work would be to maintain and support the native visible interfaces for Gnome/KDE/Unity (recent versions) etc. We should do this for the 3+ mayor distro's at least and leave the smaller ones up to the community. The engine/service of Filr should always run on any such a platform and allows a user to manage Filr command line. So, then maybe we should split the client in a service that runs on all rpm and deb based platforms and allows the command management. Then have a separate deb/rpm that supports the KDE/Gnome/Unity etc integration parts in the desktop the user runs.

A list of distro's we should support at least:
    * SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) and openSUSE LEAP: these have the same kernel and enterprise patches - should be not so hard to do (KDE and Gnome)
    * openSUSE Tumbleweed (KDE and Gnome)
    * Ubuntu (Unity)
    * Fedora (Gnome)
    * Mint

  • I completely agree with this approach Sebastian. Interestingly it's a very similar model to that used by [the hugely successful] Dropbox.

  • @Paul R. ...and Owncloud

  • That's what I miss!

  • Gets my vote, Novell have been Lax in their support for Linux as a desktop.

  • I have heard rumors that SUSE or Micro Focus have an Filr client written in python. But I have no real prof that its the case other than some one at Micro Focus told me about it. So maybe there will popup an version for at least the major Linux distributions.

  • Good news: Based on your inputs and the keen interest on this - Filr team has started working on a Linux Client for Filr!!!
Note that we don't plan to make it at par with existing Filr Mac & Windows Desktop Client but will start with basics features and build on top of it.

  • That is good news, thx!

  • As we have part on computers suse linux linux Filr client is very welcome.

  • Goog news, finally.

  • Back in the game !

  • Anybody have news if/when this might be in beta? Just ballpark...like next quarter, next year or next century?

  • Good news! But... news??

  • When can we get the release or at least the beta version of the Linux client?

  • Really, no news for 9 months....not even a blog post?

  • Do we have an update?
Linux client would be very welcome :)

  • Ubuntu has just dumped Unity and is going back to Gnome; there is one less Desktop we need a Filr client for.

  • A bete to participate in would help at the moment.

  • Dear All,

Thanks for you interest and inputs on Linux Client!

We are restarting the work on the Linux Client.

For the same we want some more inputs from you which would help us to create the client to meet your requirements.

Please participate/take the a short survey https://www.research.net/r/linuxclientforfilr for the same.

It has just 10 simple questions and won't take more than 5 minutes of your time.

    Thanks,
    Dev (Filr PM)

  • linux Filr client would be very welcomed

  • From the OES2018 release announcement on cool solutions

    https://www.novell.com/communities/coolsolutions/filr-3-3-getting-ready/

Linux Client (Tech Preview): We listen and thus when the request for Linux Client for Filr shot up in the most voted ideas at ideas portal – we decided to build one. We are starting with trimmed down variant of what we have for Windows and Mac Desktop. And we will enhance it in the future based on your inputs.

Personal Note: I am really chuffed that I started this, shows that community collaboration works.

  • Cannot wait to try it out.

  • Me too.

  • Thanks for all your inputs and interests on this!

Filr Linux Client (Tech Preview) is now available as part of Filr 3.3 (released today).

    Marking this idea as completed.
