We need this also. We would also like the ability to specify whether we receive an email notification when the file is downloaded/opened. Our current solution does this.
This is something that's keeping us from selling Filr to few financial institutions.
When the Filr API is ready a Sentinel connector would make sense.

We need this also but not only for external users also for internal users because we create separate LDAP accounts for our customers and these are no external accounts
We don't want to have to install/buy another product (eg: sentinel) in order to achieve this. We should also be able to configure filr syslog to send it to our centralized logger.
A customer has requested to receive email notifications when someone downloads a file.
An email notification along with a download limit per 3rd party download (track via an email address for download limit)and an expiration date the link will no longer be available.
I had really hoped this might be included in Filr 2.0 because my current solution needs upgraded. Looks like I am upgrading my current file share server. Hope Filr gets this capability soon...logging and notification really is important for file sharing.
Do you think someone at Novell/Attachmate/MicroFocus/What Next actually reads this ? I was really disapointed last week to discover that the support for this product ends 6 months after a new release is out... I tried to ask a question about the support lifecycle and was told by support to contact my friendly representative, who never return calls...

I guess you were referring to Filr 1.1? If so - officially the support for Filr 1.1 which was released on 02 Oct 2014 actually ended on 22 Oct 2015. But we are supporting upgrade from Filr 1.1 to Filr 2.0 so as to help you get to latest of Filr version without much hassles.
If you were referring to Filr 1.2 which was released on 22 Apr 2015 - support is still on and will be ending in 5 months from now.
On this particular idea: we have this high on our radar and will mark it planned as soon as this getting planned for our next release.

Actually I do think they are reading these (and looks like we have proof now). I was just trying to keep some activity on this one so that other people might see it and add votes. I have people using Filr here, but mostly as a WebDav replacement for NetStorage. I could simplify things in my environment and get more people interested in Filr if I could use Filr to replace our file transfer server, but that requires email notifications and logging.
For business audit is very important. If Vibe can do that, why Filr no?!!? Please implement!

A possibility, would be a report in which the logged in IP-address will be shown.
I agree that this is a very basic function for a corporate app that I continue to be astonished Filr doesn't provide.
I was hoping this would be in Filr 3.0, but I don't see it listed in the release notes. I currently have another file share solution in place that I cannot phase out until Filr has this capability. We really need notifications for when a shared file is accessed!
This seems such a simple idea to implement - just record a log of IP address (for anonymous file shares) or user id's for logged in users, with optional email alert for the user who shared the file. This is one of the two reasons we can't fully implement filr (the other being photo sync from mobile devices).

Any update on this? It seems to be quite simple in implementation and is a feature that's quite obvious to me for a file-sharing application. After all, what good does a shared file do when it doesn't get downloaded?

As I have mailed you and all voters for this idea: we are investigating on how we implement this.
On a lighter note: Implementations are never as simple as it looks ;)

We are planning to add the ability to be notified by email when "shared with" user accesses the file for the first time by providing a tick-box "notify me when recipient accessed shared item" in share dialog in Filr 3.4
Additional capabilities around this area will be added in future.
What will happen if I use the function "Share->Copy link". Will I get a notification if someone downloaded the file?

We have got main part of this implemented and released as part of Filr 3.4 (which was released few hours back)
