We have several mailboxes used for generic purposes, such as recruiting@ or helpdesk@ ... rather than distribution lists, we need to have the actual mailbox so that it can receive mail, mail can be sent from that address and so that mail sent there stays there like a holding tank.

BUT we would like to assign ownership of the mailbox to another user, like a department supervisor, who can manage passwords, rules and proxy access to this account.

  • I think you can do that with a resource mailbox. Then in addition is the advantage that they do not need license.

  • Unfortunately a resource mailbox can't have a well-defined display name. So in our case a resource mailbox is not a acceptable solution. As workaround we use full license mailboxes for such generic purposes. It would be good if
    a) each mailbox can get an owner or
    b) a resource mailbox can have a well-defined display name
