Instead of having to spin up a server to run Mailman (http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/index.html), it would be nice to let distribution lists be marked as "allow end user subscription". Then, extend the Address Book application to show which the distribution lists can be subscribed to / unsubscribed from. Lastly, the Address Book application would let a person click on one of these distribution lists and click a button to subscribe or unsubscribe.

It would still require an administrator to create the distribution list in the first place; but after marking it as "allow end user subscription", then membership in the list would be end user driven.

Some people do want to subscribe to a Community Talk distribution list ("yard sale this weekend", "free to a good home: kittens") but don't want to bother opening up a service request to join or leave the list. This enhancement would empower end users to manage their subscriptions themselves.

  • Outstanding idea. We could use this functionality right now...

  • I just had a request for this functionality from a user. Would be great to have.

  • I just had a request for this functionality from a new customer that migrated from a FirstClass email system to GroupWise. They said that their FirstClass email system had a way to allow end users to subscribe and unsubscribe to a Global Mail List in their system address book.

  • Edward, we use FirstClass, I am not aware of end users being able to do this without using the batch admin system. This would be a similar concept to using the GW admin rest API using a trusted app method. I would rather see the concept of FirstClass Conferences in Groupwise rather than subscribe/unsubscribe to mail lists. Conferences are like Shared Folders but can have an internet address/directory entry. This way the email is stored in the Shared Folder rather than in the individual mailboxes.
