If you create a distribution list but do not add any members to the list, users are still able to attempt to send mail to that distribution list. But nothing will happen since there are no members to deliver it to and no error message is returned that the message failed to deliver.

Comments

  • This does happen, when the distribution list had but a single recipient, and the recipient's mailbox got deleted because the person retired (for example).

  • I recently had a case where a top-down rebuild wiped out all the members of about 5% of my groups. Although the repair really wasn't too bad, I did hear that it was quite frustrating for a user to send an email to a group and have absolutely no idea that zero people were getting the email. Either the GroupWise Client, or, the post office agent should have kicked back an error: could not deliver - total quantity of recipients is zero.
