All Day Events you just type into the calendar are always shown as "free".
There is a setting under Tools, Options, Calendar that will set a different status for All Day Events, but only if you send them to yourself, not for those you type in directly.

This setting should also work on events I type in. The fact that it doesn't confuses my users (and me) and generates support tickets for our help desk.
