On the advanced search interface, particularly for Entities in the IDM 4.7.2. User Application, change the advanced search to initially only show one field and allow others to be added as required.
This would cut down on the effort of removing all the search attributes that are not part of the search. It would be particularly useful in environments where all the search attributes are not always populated for every entity, because 'attributename' = '*' is interpreted as 'is present' so leaving all the default search criterion in place will restrict the result from the beginning.
