We have end users who manage group memberships through the old web console. We would like to move to the new web console but one of the biggest problems with it is that the default search filter doesn't work well for us.

The default search filter searches on all object types, in all domains and for object names.

Our object names match the samAccountName which is a character followed by some numbers. Normally you would be searching for a users name so everyone will need to change it to display name. If they just change it to display name the search times out because the computer object display name is not cached in DRA and we have a lot of computers. Users will have to realize that they need to unselect computer objects before the search will work.

While various levels of administrators can be expected to change the filter, many users will not understand and open help desk tickets because they either can't find the name they are looking for or because the search times out after they change it to display name.

I would like to be able to set the default search filters in the DRA rest web console to something that will work in my environment. There is the filter on the home page and the one for adding group members and possibly others in the console.

I do like that the filter can be changed and it remembers what they were set to next time you visit the site but we need to be able to start with something that will work.

  • Hello Andrew, Thank you for the idea. I would appreciate additional feedback to this request:
Instead of displaying the initial selection list with all fields selected, would it be more effective to display the initial list without any field selected? This would allow the user to establish the change filter by selecting at least one box to proceed, at which time the initial search would take place. The user's selection would be saved and displayed as the default with subsequent visits as we do today.

  • Having the initial object types cleared for the default filter would be a bit better for us than the current setting. It would make it quite a bit less likely for someone to select the computer and display name combination.

I think that a lot of your other customers would be annoyed by having the default filter set to nothing.

  • As you already stated, the current approach is to remember what was last specified as a starting point for the next search run, so it looks like we are really focusing on the first time web console user. In the next release we have modified the web console to automatically show the "Search Filters" the first time a user logs in so that the criteria of what is being searched and how to change that is more visible to a new user.

We could adjust the static default to something between all object types and no object types to provide a better starting point for most users (For instance: Users and Groups enabled).

  • Yes. My concern with this suggestion is the experience for the first time web console user.

Ideally, for me, the default object selection would be users, groups and probably contacts. Contacts are debatable.

  • We have delivered the change in DRA 9.1 for the web console to automatically show the "Search Filters" during initial login so that the search criteria is visible to a new user. By default, we limit the search to Users and Groups. AAs can change the search criteria.
