Large DRA deployments that have gone through several product version upgrades and customization, can benefit from a migration utility to simplify migrating ActiveViews from production to the latest upgrade version. In-place upgrades are not a useful option for production environments. Incremental upgrades with a parallel transition is often required. Customers may have hundreds of ActiveViews defined, and re-creating them in a new environment is time-consuming and potentially error-prone.

I'd appreciate your feedback on this idea, and several questions:

Is this best delivered as a DRA Admin activity in the Delegation console, AA task in the Administration & Resource Management console and/or Web Console, or as a utility separate from the consoles?

Should the migration utility allow you to move a subset of AVs at different times, or should this support a bulk migration of all existing AVs between production and upgrade deployments?

How should the migration completion status be presented? As a report or interactive visual display?

  • In addition, it would be great to export/import the Virtual Attributes, Custom Roles, Customer Powers as well.

  • Great suggestion, thanks!

  • Needed without a doubt

  • Thanks for the comments. I'd like to drill down on the questions in the original posting regarding subset vs bulk move, and report vs interactive visual display... or other ideas.

  • We are evaluating a bulk migration utility that imports production ActiveViews from one Multi-Master Set to another, which will overwrite the target. For DRA 9.2, Virtual Attributes can be exported as part of the full ADLDS backup. We welcome further comment on this approach.

  • We have created the following KB article on how to export AVs into a new DRA installation environment. https://www.netiq.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7023774
